Not to be mistaken for Jamaican artist, Jaz Elise. Jae Elise's music pushes for raw, authenticity with controversial takes. Infused with her eccentric yet vibrant personality, her songs offer an innovative take on Spirituality, Hip-hop/Rap and R&B, with the euphoria of other third world-war country music brought to production that makes every track feel refreshed and nostalgic. The California to Texas native introduces herself into the music industry in 2023 with "Love Indefinitely" as her first single. Although, commercial success hasn't peaked for the young singer-songwriter/producer, she continues to make the music she likes.
"I just got tired of hearing the same narrative of there is no good music. I wanted to showcase that I'm versatile in multiples of genres. People always want to box you in and truthfully? Why the f*** would I do that?" the surging singer/songwriter says. "I always wanted to sing and perform. However, I wanted to do it on my own terms. I've watched singers go thru a lot behind the scenes based off of shows such as UnSung. It made me realize that I rather create my own opportunities."
Jae’s mother and grandmother fostered creative childhood homes in Texas, playing the likes of Aaliyah, Busta Rhymes, TuPac, Janet Jackson, Brandy, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, The Delfonics, Donny Hathaway, Sade, Carlos Santana, Rihanna, Mariah Carey, Selena Quintanilla, Faith Evans, Karen Clark Sheard, etc. while practicing stage performance in her grandmother's living room. She often danced with her childhood friends in talent shows —“I was that kid that was super competitive to be the best”—and as soon as her mother came back from deployment, she put Jae in modeling classes/pageants. As a child, she would move back and forth between the military base and San Antonio, but go on to do musical theatre and sports to keep her busy. At the age of 12, an unfortunate situation took place, where Jae, her mother, and 6-month old little sister were homeless and living in their Odyssey van; jumping from hotel to back again with only $17. While Jae continued school, she was heavily bullied but continued to pen songs more seriously in her journal , which led to writing poetry and singing.
In 2009, Jae's mother had orders to move to Virginia. Devastated, once again, having to leave friends behind, Jae tried to make the best of it by making new friends. Although, she didn't have many friends, she turned to the arts, boxing and choir. Jae described choir as a "way to escape but challenging."
"I loved choir! We all had a good time and super goofy. There were times I was unsure of myself and my voice. Although, I was a mezzo-soprano, my teacher told me my voice wasn't good enough [rebuttal]. I lost a lot of confidence during that time in my life. I was in an abusive "relationship", as well. I kinda gave up after that."
By the time Jae turned 17-18 years old, she gave birth to Autistic twin boys.
"I was bedridden for half my senior year. Definitely, went thru depression, body conscious issues, etc. If it wasn't for my mother, I don't know how I'd make it. However, my sons came out beautiful and great."
Finishing out her senior year and graduating, in June 2012, Jae left Virginia to move back to Texas. Jae went on to study cosmetology and medical, because of the inherent uncertainty attached to artistic pursuits. “My family had a lot of musical talent, but never honed on it. They didn’t want that for me, so they pushed me to go to trade school and it was obviously out of love,” she says, noting she now has her mothers’ undying support. “I had to make the decision late in life that music is my true passion. I regret listening a little bit because decisions were made for me instead of what I wanted.”
In 2019, Jae went to go achieve her Associates degree in Music Production at Los Angeles Film School Online. Although, she thoroughly enjoyed beat-making; she wanted to venture off into the business side of music. This led to her wanting to open her record label, Set Da Tone Records which will be open in 2025.
By continuing to follow her intuition, Jae is priming herself to build her fan base, maximize her reach and polish her development as an artist . She’s focused on the year ahead with the same intention from when she began. “I can’t wait for the day I perform in front of thousands of people and they can finally hear and see me as a trailblazer,” she says. “I'm someone who has a lot to say, with reason and assertiveness. I just can’t wait for people to know that I’m here to represent the Independent artist that haven't been heard, yet. ”
Love Indefinitely is a song of self love thru expression and reflection to higher consciousness.
